What are Best Practices?

"It's the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority" - Benjamin Franklin or to be more succinct "Think for your self and question authority." - Timothy Leary What is a 'Best Practice'? A best practice is not a standard, nor is it a policy. It's a specific activity, performed performed under specific circumstances which will presumably result in a favorable outcome. A best practice is well documented, it's well researched and it's is well documented. Best practice documentation is not only on the execution of the practice itself, but also on the researched alternatives with rational as to why these practices were not considered the 'best'. A best practice is not a notion, theory, or whim. It is not a half-baked idea of something that SHOULD be. A best practice is definitely NOT a shield to prevent others from exploring other means of accomplishing the same task. The previous two paragraphs are very dire...

Storing Database Object versions in Oracle Database

Using DDL trigger to call the DBMS_METADATA package to get source code of object, or use Oracle Dictionary Versions Compare between versions Use DIFF java class, deployed as Stored Procedure Developed by Stuart D Garthman  API to query the objects versions are just SQL queries, pipeline function, etc to return the differences - could use APEX front end DDL triggers are a bit risky, use appropriate error handling [Author note: formating is crappy here because my laptop ran out of battery. Need to charge. Also, not the best presntation]

Database links without TNSNAMES.ora

So, you step a test database on another server, and you don't want to wait for PUPPET 1 to push out an update to your managed TNSNAMES.ora file with the database connection information. So how to you create a database link? The short answer can be summed up like so: " Don't overthink the problem. " Normally we create database links like so: SQL> create database link devdb connect to scott identified by tiger using 'DEVDB';   where DEVDB is an entry in your TNSNAMES.ora file. In the absence of such entries, a close approximation of the TNSNAMES.ora entry so we have this instead: SQL> create database link devdb connect to scott identified by tiger using '(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS= (PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=devhost.domain.com)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=DEVDB)))'; 1 because you manage TNSNAMES files with a configuration tool, like Puppet, right? RIGHT!
